On 2 September 2025, the Australian Government announced that the migration planning level for the 2025-26 permanent Migration Program has been set at 185,000 places, consistent with the 2024-25 program settings.
According to the Department of Home Affairs, the program continues to prioritise the Skill stream, designed to strengthen Australia’s working-age population, increase labour force participation, and address critical skill shortages, particularly in regional areas.
Out of the total 185,000 places, around 132,200 spots (over 70%) are allocated to the Skilled stream, aiming to meet labour market needs. The Family stream receives about 52,500 places, while 300 visas are reserved for Special Eligibility cases.
The Skilled stream continues to target workers with critical skills and qualifications. As part of the transition to the National Innovation visa, applicants under the Global Talent and Distinguished Talent programs will be included without disadvantage. Regional and state/territory nominated visas comprise 36% of the overall program and half of the Skilled stream, allowing jurisdictions to address their specific labor needs.
The Family stream remains an important element of Australia’s migration system, supporting family reunions and social cohesion. The Partner visa is the largest category and operates on a demand-driven basis, while the Child visa program remains set at 3,000 places for planning purposes.
